When Lucy told me she was pregnant I remember the joy, excitement and no small amount of fear of the unknown. Our journey into parenthood was something that neither of us had any previous experience of, so when Lucy told me she wanted to do a hypnobirthing course as a way to help us both during labour I agreed, being the nice supportive husband and all that, although secretly I was rather skeptical about the whole thing…
Well, we did the course and immediately appreciated the vast amount of help and experience our hypnobirthing teacher gave us in comparison to the ante-natal classes we had been attending at the local hospital. Whilst a number of medical issues meant that we didn’t get our ideal birth experience (by quite some margin) the hypnobirthing techniques we had learnt gave us much more control of the situations we found ourselves in, and meant that we coped calmly and quietly throughout. The result was a beautiful baby girl, which was followed a few years later by a beautiful baby boy who was also born peacefully and calmly using the hypnobirthing techniques we had learned.
Am I still skeptical as to the benefits of hypnobirthing to help couples achieve a calm and peaceful birth? Not at all. It works, and gives you confidence to enjoy the birth of your children, which is surely what the whole experience should be about.
